New Years Resolutions And Weight Loss - Is It Rather A Forgotten Mission?
Do you have a new years weight loss resolution?
The main reason so many new years weight loss resolutions are unsuccessful is that they are usually made due to the external optimism of making them on the new year. As though it were a required ritual of the special day, part of the ceremony of the holidays, like hanging tinsel on the Christmas shrub.
To achieve success a resolution needs to be internal. And while new years is just as good a day as any to make one, making one just because it's new years is not. As a matter of fact, the tradition may over time have actually obstructed people success.
Precisely why? Because according to some experts only 8% of New Year's Resolutions are accomplished. (I have no idea how they calculate that, but it sounds true somehow.)
The result is that we now have as a society developed a "Failure Syndrome" around the subject of New Year's resolutions. We expect to fail and sure enough, we do.
After I finally quit smoking after more than 100 attempts that failed, my main obstacle became overcoming my habit of failure more than the smoking habit. I ultimately succeeded as I devised a strategy aimed at staying quit a definitive period of time and then permitting myself to smoke again, once I hit that limit. That took away, my sense that I was going to fail anyhow so I may as well have a cigarette now and get it over with.
Now I don't know if that will benefit anyone else, but it actually did for me.
The real key to setting a new years resolution weight loss, is not to focus on losing weight.
We have to think about resolutions not as wishes or even goals.
We may wish we were thinner and more healthy. We may want to be x pounds, or even x pounds by a definite date. But the real solution is not on what we want. It's about how exactly we are going to get there.
A resolution is not a "Want to," it's a "How To." What are we going to do to attain the desired effects?
So it may be important to think about the steps to making a resolution for a short time.
First, we must come to a realization that something must change in our lives. The key once again is the first person, "we" which means YOU.
Second, having accepted the need to make something happen, We (you) have to calculate what you will actually need to do to achieve that something. The clearer you are on this "Plan" the better, but even a vague plan, if realistic and believable to the only person that matters is okay. (Incidentally, that's you again.)
Lastly, the critical step is that you actually decide to do it. This is a decision - not a wish.
The resolution once made is fragile, like a newborn infant and needs nurture and care. In the beginning your own will power and commitment may be enough to sustain it and get you off to a start.
Your initial achievements can serve to encourage you to continue, but you need to see that success. And that means you need to monitor the progress. If you cannot gauge it, it will be difficult to use that success to sustain your enthusiasm and commitment.
I hope you got the gist of this message, which is to appreciate that a resolution is not a wish, but a plan.
I encourage you to think about your plan and how you will sustain it in the face of unavoidable occasional failure. Persistence is the key. Go for it.
